Some Thoughts On How To Reduce Your Credit Card Debt

It is the easiest thing in the world to get into debt but, regrettably, getting out of debt is often a very hard and long road to travel. For most people today it is credit cards which are the basis of their debt problem and clearing credit card debt takes a little of thought and a lot of restraint.

You must start by cutting down on your expenditure on your credit cards, and if possible to stop using your credit cards completely. Credit cards are much too easy to use and the first trick is to leave your credit cards at home when you go shopping and to just take enough cash with you to cover your needs.

Naturally you are still going to see things which you want to buy and that you would have bought if you had had a credit card with you, but the mere fact that you have to return home for your credit card to buy something means that you will think twice about it. With any luck, it will also make you consider whether you really do need some things. One of the biggest problems with credit cards is that they let you make impulse buys and more often than not these items are things that you can live without.

However, lowering your spending is just one side of the equation because you still have to do something to clear your current debt. Of course lowering your expenditure will assist because you will now have more money in your pocket and will be able to start paying off more of your credit card debt every month. Of course this could still leave you contemplating a lengthy time period before your cards are clear, but it is an excellent start.

Another effective way to reduce your credit card debt could be credit card debt consolidation which involves taking your present credit card debts and rolling them all into a single card debt with a lower interest charge. This does not of course clear any of your debt but it slows down the rate of growth of the debt every month as interest is added to your account and so gives you a better chance to deal with the problem. Nowadays there is immense competition between credit card companies and there are all sorts of inducements on offer to consolidate existing credit card debt, including such things as an interest holiday with 0% APR being charged to a new card for its first three or six months. However, as with and financial offer you do need to read the fine print carefully and ensure that you understand precisely what sort of contract you are signing. If you fail to read the fine print with care you could find that you are jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

An alternative to credit card debt consolidation is to merely talk to your credit card company and see if they would be willing to lower the interest rate on your present card. You might be surprised to find that with so so much competition in the market many companies will accommodate you in order to keep your business.

If you find that despite your best efforts you simply feel that you are not going to be able to reduce your debt to manageable levels then you might wish to negotiate the settlement of your debt with your credit card company. However, negotiating settlement of a credit card debt is something of an art and this is not a route which you should follow without seeking professional advice.

Unhappily, there is no easy answer to clearing credit card debts and it really comes down to disciplining yourself into reigning in your expenditure and paying off as much of your balance as you can afford each month. It is also a very good idea to get professional debt assistance before things get out of control.
